Olympic diver Matty Lee, who won a memorable gold medal alongside Tom Daley in Tokyo 2020, retired from sport at the age of 26.

Lee and Daley won gold in the 10 m male synchronized platform, a result that ended Daley’s gold in what was the first Lee Olympic Games.

The Lee, born in Leeds, missed the Paris Olympic Games last year due to difficulties with a back injury, following an operation on its spine.

He confirmed his diving retirement in a post on Instagram and said of his gold medal alongside Daley: “What a trip, what moment we shared. Olympic champions forever.”

“After 20 years in sport, it’s time for me to move away from diving,” said Lee.

“This decision was not easy, but after losing my father in 2022, I had a hard time finding the same passion that I once had, he was my why.

“Then wounds, surgeries and awareness that I don’t want to be a broken man to move forward.”

In addition to a series of photos of his diving career, which also included medals at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships, Lee added: “What is the next one?” Honestly, I don’t know. And it’s both terrifying and exciting.

“But I know, there is more in life than diving, and I’m ready for that.”
